We did a final rehearsal before the recording.

Monday May 26, afternoon.

We, Bop Tribal, are planning to produce a CD and video clips (or possibly a DVD) spending a full-day on recording next Monday, June 2nd. We will record our original compositions. We rehearsed this afternoon and all songs are sounding great. These include varieties from swing, Dixie, Latin, Ballad, Straight 8th jazz, Funky jazz, Waltz, 6/4 straight 8th jazz, Modern Bebop, Funk Rock to 5/4 waltz-- and all of these will showcase our music.

We are going to have a preview/fundraising show this Thursday May 29, 8:00 p.m. at the Dragon Upstairs.
Please come and join us this Thursday.


Lots of people will help us. Our good friend, Johann, will record us live. We hired 2 pro video crews and 1 photographer, too. We will also be video-shot and photo-shot at our next rehearsal on May 29 afternoon.
I am hoping we can make good music video clips as well as a great CD.

A BeBoppin' Night in Chinatown

At 8:15 one night last weekend, the Dragon Upstairs was virtually empty. By 8:45 the second-floor Chinatown nightclub was packed. By 9 the band was gathered around leader Satomi Yarimizo's piano, learning a brand-new tune written by trumpeter DeShannon Higa.

The tune's called "Bop Tribal." So's the band. The crowd -- admittedly, it takes only 50 or so people to fill the Dragon Upstairs -- is here as a gesture of faith. This is Bop Tribal's first performance ever.

The faith was not misplaced. It was one of those rare nights: the right crowd in the right room for the right band.

In addition to Yarimizo and Higa, the quintet included tenor sax Reggie Padilla, bass player Jon Hawes and, from the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, drummer Adam Baron.

The quintet ripped through tunes by Horace Silver, John Coltrane, Clifford Brown. The crowd rocked along. "You go, girl," yelled voices from the back when Yarimizo came out smokin' on one of her piano solos.

Baron was thundering on drums, "channeling his inner Art Blakey," as he put it. On his way to the gig, Baron had stopped to help a pedestrian who'd tripped in a crosswalk, ending up with blood on his shirt. He'd had to go to Aloha Tower, the closest open place, to buy a new one.

"If I'd known all it took to get Adam to play like that was a new shirt," said Higa, "I'd have bought him one every gig."

BOP TRIBAL: musician 5: Jon Hawes

Jon Hawes is one of the busiest bassists in Hawaii. I always have so much fun playing with him.

Jon spent more than seven years touring the mainland as a bassist with east-coast acts such as Peter Prince & Moon Boot Lover and Percy Hill before re-locating to Oahu's north shore in 2003. Since arriving in the islands, he has become busy performing on stage or on recordings with Henry Kapono (with whom he recorded the Grammy-nominated and Na Hoku winning CD 'The Wild Hawaiian'), Michael McDonald, Makana, Paula Fuga, New Jass Quartet, Toyz of Pleasure, Shawn Livingston Mosely, Shephen Inglis and more.

BOP TRIBAL: musician 4: von Baron

von Baron has been supporting me since I started learning and playing jazz in 2004. He also played for my first gig at the 'Blowout 2004'. Now, I can play with him more regularly which makes me so happy.

von Baron (drums)

Originally from Kansas, von spent three years studying drums, percussion and music at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and then at Berklee Collage of Music in Boston. He studied classical, jazz and Brazilian music extensively. He lived in Seattle for a few years where he performed regularly before he move to Hawaii in 2000. He has enjoyed a very rewarding career in music performing and recording with local, national, international artists of many genres. Over the years, von has worked with artists and groups including, The Honolulu Jazz Quartet, the Honolulu Symphony, Mihana Souza, Show Brazil! and many others.
He also released his debut album "Pangaea" in 2007.

BOP TRIBAL: musician 3: Reggie Padilla

Reggie Padilla and I are playing a lot together since he moved from New York at the beginning of 2007. He is so talented young musician. He also plays beautiful piano!

Reggie was born and raised in New York, he received his master's degree in music from New York University and studied with Pete Malinverni, Don Friedman and Bob Albanese. He also received coaching from bassist Martin Wind. Reggie has performed at New York venues such as The Biter End, CBGC's , The Lion's Den, and among many others. He is also on a video on BET, on Kyle Jason's "Why am I So Funky".

He moved to Hawaii at the beginning of 2007 to stay for good, and has quickly become one of the most in-demand musicians on the Honolulu music scene.

BOP TRIBAL: musician 2: DeShannon Higa

DeShannon Higa is the most popular jazz musician in Hawaii and I really respect him. I'm learning lots of things from him musically and also how I manage the band. He is my big teacher. :) He is also the main composer of the band.

DeShannon Higa (trumpet)

DeShannon is a renown jazz trumpet player both in Hawaii and New York City. His professional experience spans 20 years. He has performed around the world and in famous venues like Birdland, Carnegie Halll and Radio City Music Hall. Among his teachers are studio legend Ollie Mitchell, Grammy Award winning jazz trumpet player Brian Lynch and other famous musicians. He also recorded on many albums including those of Raiatea Helm, Hula Joe & the Hutjumpers (received a Hoku award for best jazz album). His credits include such notable artists as Burt Bacharach, Joe Williams, Diana Krall, Al Jarreau, and Tower of Power, among many others!

DeShannon's style of music range from jazz to latin/salsa to modern electronica break beat music. As a bandleader/visionary, he has assembled and is currently performing with two bands of his own creation: gr00ve.imProV.arTists(an urban jazz-electronica dance band) and Quadpod(a neo-bop quartet).

BOP TRIBAL: musician 1: satomi

I am going to introduce my quintet band, BOP TRIBAL.

I started taking piano and organ lessons in Japan at age three. During my teen years, I played drums, guitar as well as saxophone. I really loved playing music. At age 13. I started playing simple jazz/fusion by ear. I already loved jazz very much and listen the same tapes ( because I did not have many) over and over. :) During middle and high schools I did a lot of ensemble and arrangement work for piano and keyboard.

My former job at a computer company fortunately brought me to Hawaii in 2000, and I worked a couple of years with the company ( and we made a computer-animated feature film!). On March, 2004 I happened to sit-in to play piano on my friend's jazz show at the Rafters and then people started supporting me and and I started to seriously teach myself jazz theory and to sit in at local jazz venues in order to become a full-time musician, which is my real passion. I really appreciate that many people and friends keep supporting and helping me since then.

In 2005, a friend of mine and one of the greatest trumpet player, Tiger Okoshi recommended me to come to his school, so I attended the intensive summer course at the Berklee College of Music in Boston to further enrich my understanding of jazz. I started gigging soon after I returned to Honolulu, and now regularly perform jazz 4 to 5 nights a week at assorted venues with my duo, trio, quartet and quintet featuring various respected local musicians.

I am so happy that I can play music everyday. Music gives me a chance to meet lots of nice people.

BOP TRIBAL

BOP TRIBAL is a Hawaii-based jazz quintet group playing bebop, hard bop, and our original tunes.

DeShannon Higa named the band and also wrote a very cool theme song, 'BOP TRIBAL'. We will start from the theme song on our next show on April 12th@the Dragon Upstairs. You do not want to miss it!

I am the leader (aka the "manager" making copies of the charts, transcribing and arranging the songs, creating and printing charts using finale and putting them into binders, booking musicians and making calls to the club owners, designing, making and distributing flyers, and etc...) and I really enjoy it :)

DeShannon Higa is writing lots of original songs for us. I am very much looking forward to playing them with BOP TRIBAL.
Reggie Padilla and I also have some original songs and we will play them in our upcoming shows.
I want to play Reggie's beautiful ballad, 'Tune 4 April', on our April show.
